Watch Billy Idol’s Emotional Lifetime Achievement Speech and First-Ever AMAs Performance

Billy Idol was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd American Music Awards over the weekend, and the celebration came with a meaningful first: his debut American Music Awards performance. Idol shared the stage with longtime guitarist and collaborator Steve Stevens for a medley built around two of his best-known songs, “Eyes Without a Face” and “Dancing With Myself.”

During his acceptance speech, Idol reflected on how uncertain the future looked when he first started out in punk in the mid-1970s. He said that when he began in 1976, nobody knew whether the music would last six months, let alone five decades, but it was always driven by love for the music and the scene around it. He then used the moment to encourage younger fans to follow their own creative instincts and pursue art if that is where their passion leads.

Idol also tied the award back to the people who helped build his career. In his remarks, he said it was a tremendous honor to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year alongside so many of his heroes and influences, and said being inducted with Steve Stevens made the recognition even more special. He added that when he first played with Generation X 50 years ago, everything came from a love of the music and the scene, and he credited the people around him over the years for helping him get to where he is now.

Stevens also spoke in the segment, saying he was deeply honored to be recognized with Idol and describing their shared journey as one filled with music, creativity, and unforgettable experiences. He thanked the Rock Hall, the fans, and everyone who has been part of their story, underscoring just how long their partnership has shaped Idol’s live sound and career.

The AMAs tribute also arrives at a busy time for Idol. He is set to return to the road this summer for the next leg of his “It’s A Nice Day To…Tour Again!” world tour, which has already sold out venues across the U.S., Europe, and Latin America over the past year. The upcoming run kicks off on August 7 at The Pavilion at Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pennsylvania, with support from DEVO, Susanna Hoffs, VILLANELLE, and Grocery Bag on select dates.

Idol will also launch a Las Vegas residency titled “Hot In The City: Las Vegas” at Fontainebleau from August 28 through September 5. The live show has continued to draw strong reviews, with the source noting praise for its energy, authority, and the fact that Idol still has plenty left to offer onstage more than four decades into his career.

That momentum extends beyond the stage. Idol’s documentary Billy Idol Should Be Dead, directed by Jonas Åkerlund and produced by Live Nation Studios, is now streaming on Hulu after its theatrical run. The film traces his rise from punk pioneer to MTV-era global star and looks at the challenges he overcame to remain one of rock’s most recognizable figures.

He also released his first full-length album of new music in more than a decade, Dream Into It, through Dark Horse Records. The album reached No. 7 on the U.S. Top Albums chart, No. 4 on the U.S. Current Rock Album chart, No. 9 on the U.K. Official Album Sales chart, and No. 2 on the German Top 100 Album chart, with guest contributions from Avril Lavigne, Joan Jett, and Alison Mosshart alongside Stevens.

Later this year, Idol and Stevens will also be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026, alongside names including Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross, and the Wu-Tang Clan. The induction ceremony will tape on November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will air in December on ABC and Disney+ before returning to Cleveland in 2027.

For Billy Idol, the AMAs moment was more than just an award show stop. It connected the earliest days of punk to a career that has now crossed fifty years, and it reminded viewers that the same defiant energy that launched him in the 1970s is still driving him now.
