Sammy Hagar has candidly admitted that the recent downsizing of his highly anticipated upcoming UK tour was directly caused by disappointing ticket sales. The former Van Halen frontman is currently preparing to embark on his first tour of the United Kingdom in three decades, a milestone run that was initially mapped out to hit massive, major-market arenas in Manchester, London, Leeds, and Birmingham.
Shifting from Arenas to Intimate Venues
Faced with slower-than-expected box office returns, Hagar scaled back the itinerary in favor of much tighter, lower-capacity settings. The updated schedule pivots away from sprawling arenas, redirecting the band to:
-
The Wolverhampton Civic Hall, which holds a capacity of 3,400 fans.
-
The O2 Apollo in Manchester, featuring a capacity of 3,500.
-
A specialized three-show residency at London’s brand-new British Airways ARC, a venue capped at 3,800 attendees.
When the venue changes were initially announced to the public, Hagar protected the box office narrative by framing the decision around his creative desires. He originally stated that the swap was inspired by his recent residency experience in Las Vegas, which allowed him to foster an intimate connection with the crowd and deeply explore his massive musical catalog.
“Guilty as Charged”
However, during a transparent new radio interview with Total Rock (via Blabbermouth), Hagar decided to set the record straight, freely acknowledging that economic reality dictated the logistical shift.
“I love the fact that we get to do three shows in London,” Hagar shared. “I love the fact that we’ve moved it to a smaller venue so it’ll be full instead of playing some big giant place that holds 12 [thousand] but there’s only 6,000 people there. The ambience of that is so much different, and that’s why we changed it. Guilty as charged — we didn’t sell it out. I thought, ‘Oh, we’ll sell that out, no problem.’”
Despite the box office stumble, the rock vocalist maintained that the multi-night residency structure offers a massive silver lining for diehard fans who want to hear rare material.
“For someone that can afford to buy three tickets, which I know it’s tough, but they’re gonna get a lot,” Hagar added. “They’re gonna go, ‘Wow, I can’t believe they played that,’ ’cause we play deep tracks.”
Inspired by the Prince of Darkness
During the interview, Hagar also detailed the exact emotional catalyst that pushed him to book a UK tour after thirty years away. The inspiration struck last summer when Hagar traveled across the Atlantic to perform at Ozzy Osbourne’s Back to the Beginning farewell concert—a high-profile event that famously took place just a few weeks prior to the Black Sabbath icon’s death.
Hagar confessed he was “so nervous” about taking the stage due to his prolonged absence from British shores. Ultimately, the crowd’s rapturous reception far exceeded his expectations, serving as a powerful reminder of his enduring popularity in the territory.
“I told my manager the next day, I said, ‘I wanna go play the UK, I have to,’” Hagar recollected. “Because there’s so many fans over there that probably grew up on my music, that are probably kind of too old to be going to concerts, and the younger people that really don’t know who I am. I can’t live with that.”
The All-Star Lineup & Tour Kickoff
While the rooms may be smaller, the musical firepower behind Hagar remains monumental. For this UK trek, The Red Rocker has assembled a legendary heavyweight backing band consisting of:
-
Virtuoso guitarist Joe Satriani
-
Longtime Van Halen brother-in-arms and bassist Michael Anthony
-
Powerhouse session and touring drummer Kenny Aronoff
The downsized, highly intimate UK tour is officially scheduled to kick off on July 6th at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
