Bonnie Tyler, 74, Suffers Cardiac Arrest in Portugal After Emergency Surgery — Remains in Intensive Care
Welsh rock legend Bonnie Tyler is fighting for her health after suffering a cardiac arrest in a Portuguese hospital, just days after undergoing emergency surgery. The “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer, 74, remains in intensive care at Faro Hospital in the Algarve, where she has been since May 6, 2026.

According to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã, the symptoms first appeared while Tyler was in the United Kingdom during a show. She reportedly began feeling unwell, was examined by doctors, but no diagnosis was reached at the time. When she returned to her home in the Algarve, her condition worsened. She was initially taken to a private hospital before being transferred to Faro Hospital.
Some reports indicate that she had been experiencing several days of abdominal pain before seeking medical attention, and doctors subsequently discovered an intestinal perforation. Further information confirmed that her appendix had burst, requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Tyler’s team issued an official statement on May 6 via her Facebook page and website: “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Shortly after, a spokesperson confirmed to The Guardian that she had been placed in a medically-induced coma to aid her recovery, with the statement adding: “We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time. We will issue a further statement when we are able to.”

What initially appeared to be a stabilizing situation took a dramatic and dangerous turn just two days later. Tyler’s health deteriorated significantly on May 8, when she suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. According to Correio da Manhã, the arrest occurred as doctors attempted to bring her out of the induced coma. She was subsequently resuscitated.
As of the latest reports, the singer remains hospitalized in intensive care at Faro Hospital.
Tour Plans Now in Jeopardy
Tyler had been preparing to embark on a European tour, with the first concert scheduled for later in May 2026. Those plans are now indefinitely on hold as her medical team focuses entirely on her recovery.
A Career Carved in Rock History
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales, Bonnie Tyler became one of the most distinctive voices in rock and pop history. She earned three Grammy nominations in the 1980s and topped international charts with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” one of the best-selling singles of all time. Her catalog also includes iconic tracks like “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Here She Comes.” She has been married to her husband, Robert Sullivan, since 1973.

This isn’t Tyler’s first health scare in recent months. Earlier in 2025, she had undergone emergency knee surgery and was on crutches for several weeks, though she remained determined to continue recording and touring. At the time, she told Woman’s Weekly: “I’ve got lots of energy and can’t stand not being able to potter around and get on with things.”
The music world is holding its breath. No further official statement has been issued beyond the initial announcement, with her team requesting privacy during this critical period.
