JAMES LOMENZO REFUSES TO RULE OUT NEW MEGADETH MUSIC

The heavy metal community is still reeling from the January 23, 2026, release of the self-titled masterpiece, Megadeth. Debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the album was marketed globally as the “seventeenth and final” studio effort from Dave Mustaine’s thrash legends. However, just weeks into the band’s high-octane Global Farewell Tour, bassist James LoMenzo has dropped a bombshell that has fans questioning if the curtain is truly falling.

In a recent interview with Metal Injection, LoMenzo addressed the “finality” of the new record and whether Vic Rattlehead might have one more trick up his sleeve.

The Loophole in the “Final” Album

While Dave Mustaine has been vocal about his battle with Dupuytren’s contracture—a condition making guitar playing increasingly painful—LoMenzo suggests that the term “final studio album” might have some creative wiggle room.

“Technically, yes, it’s the final album,” LoMenzo clarified. “But in the modern age, music doesn’t just live on 12-track LPs. Dave is a fountain of riffs. We’re still humming new ideas in the dressing room. I wouldn’t totally rule out a rogue single, an EP, or even soundtrack contributions. The door isn’t locked; it’s just that the ‘album era’ for Megadeth has reached its peak.”

A Career-High Farewell

The success of the 2026 self-titled album has put Megadeth in a unique position. For the first time in their 43-year history, they reached the pinnacle of the US charts, fueled by the viral success of the single “Tipping Point” and their blistering cover of “Ride The Lightning.” LoMenzo noted that the chemistry between himself, Mustaine, drummer Dirk Verbeuren, and guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari is the strongest he’s ever felt. “It’s bittersweet,” he admitted. “We’re playing better than ever, the fans are louder than ever, and we’re sitting at No. 1. Why stop? But Dave wants to go out on top, on his own terms.”

What Comes After the Tour?

The Farewell Tour, which kicked off on February 15, 2026, in Victoria, BC, is expected to run through at least 2028. While the band is focused on these “last” performances, rumors are already swirling about Mustaine’s potential solo future or a legendary collaboration with Metallica that Dave has recently hinted “needs to happen.”

For now, fans can rest easy knowing that while the studio albums might be done, the spirit of Megadeth—and potentially some “surprise” new tracks—remains very much alive.
