“Lack of Originality”: Ritchie Blackmore’s Bold Take on A legendary Band

Ritchie Blackmore

Standing out in the music industry requires a unique blend of talent, self-belief, and a hint of bravado. This is a hallmark of true innovators, like John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and Ritchie Blackmore. Blackmore, the legendary guitarist of Deep Purple, carved his niche in the guitar hero era by breaking tradition and crafting an unmistakable sound.

Known for his explosive style and creativity, Blackmore wielded the Fender Stratocaster with a ferocity that resonated throughout the rock landscape. His signature riffs, dive bombs, and intricate solos quickly earned him a place among rock royalty, sitting shoulder to shoulder with icons like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck.

Blackmore’s innovative spirit was matched only by his fearless personality. He was unafraid to voice his opinions about his peers, notably The Rolling Stones, whose lack of originality he found distasteful.

In a 1978 interview with Trouser Press, he shared his journey into rock music, tracing his roots back to early rock and roll stars like Elvis Presley and Duane Eddy. However, by the age of 17, Blackmore rejected the idea of having idols, preferring to forge his own path and drawing inspiration from classical musicians rather than rock guitarists.

While he acknowledged the contributions of Jimi Hendrix and the band Cream, vocal-focused groups like The Beatles and The Hollies failed to resonate with him. His most pointed criticism, however, was directed at The Rolling Stones. Blackmore didn’t hold back, labeling them “idiots” and accusing them of recycling Chuck Berry riffs without originality.

“I can see why they’re respected and their rhythms are very good, very steady on record. I respect them, but I don’t like them,” he stated candidly.

In the realm of rock music, Ritchie Blackmore stands out not only for his extraordinary talent but also for his willingness to challenge the status quo. His scathing remarks about The Rolling Stones underscore his commitment to authenticity in music, setting him apart as a true pioneer in the industry.
