Tom Morello has never been one to separate music from activism, and he’s making it clear that he has no intention of starting now.

The Rage Against the Machine guitarist recently pushed back against critics who argue that musicians should avoid political discussions, questioning why artists should be expected to surrender the same rights enjoyed by everyone else.

“You don’t give your right of free speech away when you pick up a guitar,” Morello said, rejecting the idea that entertainers should remain silent on issues they care about. He went a step further by suggesting that many of the people demanding musicians “stay out of politics” are often reacting to views they simply don’t agree with.

Morello’s comments have reignited a long-running debate over the role celebrities should play in political discourse. While some fans believe artists should focus exclusively on their craft, the guitarist argues that every profession comes with the same right to express personal beliefs.

“Why should you give away your free speech rights in the job that you do?” Morello asked, challenging the notion that musicians should be treated differently from journalists, teachers, business owners, or any other citizens.

For anyone familiar with Rage Against the Machine, the stance shouldn’t come as a surprise. Politics have been woven into the band’s identity since its formation in the early 1990s, with songs tackling subjects ranging from government power and corporate influence to social justice and civil rights.

Morello also dismissed criticism from listeners who claim to enjoy the band’s music while objecting to its political messaging. In previous remarks, he suggested that some fans failed to grasp what the music was about in the first place, arguing that Rage Against the Machine’s message has never been subtle.

The guitarist’s latest remarks arrive at a time when debates over free speech, celebrity influence, and political activism remain deeply divisive. But if critics were hoping Morello would tone things down, his response suggests the opposite.

One thing appears certain: after more than three decades of mixing riffs with resistance, Tom Morello still sees speaking out as part of the job description.

“One thing I will not be doing is shutting up anytime soon,” he previously declared.
