Tony Iommi: “The Godfather of Heavy Metal” — Volume One Documentary Is Now Streaming

Gibson TV has released the first installment of its new limited documentary series Tony Iommi: The Godfather of Heavy Metal, offering fans a definitive look at the life, legacy, and monumental influence of the Black Sabbath guitarist widely credited with helping invent heavy metal. Volume One of the series is now available to stream exclusively on Gibson TV throughout 2026, chronicling Iommi’s early years, his pioneering sound, and the global impact of his music.

Born in the industrial heart of Birmingham, England, Tony Iommi emerged from working-class roots to create a sound that resonated with generations of music lovers and musicians alike. The first episode explores his humble beginnings and the formation of Black Sabbath, focusing on the riff-driven guitar work that would lay the groundwork for heavy metal — a genre that redefined rock and became a way of life for millions.

Volume One features in-depth interviews with Iommi himself, who reflects on his journey from a young musician to one of the most influential guitarists in music history. Alongside him are insights from fellow rock icons, including Brian May, Rob Halford, Tom Morello, Zakk Wylde, and Yungblud, each discussing how Iommi’s riffs and vision shaped their own musical paths and the wider heavy music landscape.

Guitar legends speak with admiration throughout the episode. Brian May praises Iommi’s pervasive influence, noting that his sound is felt across countless artists and styles. Morello calls Iommi “the greatest riff writer of all time,” while Wylde recounts how the music’s power made an indelible impression on him. Their perspectives underscore how one man’s creativity became foundational to an entire musical movement.

The series goes beyond celebratory commentary, tracing the emotional and cultural arc of heavy metal from its roots in the fading counterculture of the late 1960s to its emergence as a dominant global force. Iommi’s contribution — both technically and spiritually — is presented as essential, marking him as a figure whose influence extends far beyond his own catalog.

In related news, Iommi recently shared a year-end message confirming that he will “definitely, definitely” release a new solo album in 2026, giving fans even more to look forward to beyond the docuseries. His recent solo work includes instrumental music such as “Deified” and collaborations that reflect his ongoing creativity and enduring legacy.

For aficionados of heavy music and those curious about its origins, Tony Iommi: The Godfather of Heavy Metal Volume One is a rich, absorbing tribute to a guitarist whose work not only defined a genre but also inspired countless musicians to pick up the instrument and push the boundaries of rock.
