During their peak years, Rush was often hailed as the sophisticated choice in progressive rock. They weren’t just one of the most intense prog bands; listening to Neil Peart’s lyrics plunged you into a philosophical exploration of human existence and hope within a futuristic setting. Prior to Peart joining, however, the band’s initial performances involved a great deal of improvisation.
Even without Peart, the band members, including Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, showcased incredible skill. John Rutsey, their original drummer, also demonstrated notable prowess. Despite Rutsey’s talent, his departure paved the way for Peart to join and redefine the band’s direction.
Their debut album feels like a throwback to the era before progressive rock, with the band leaning towards a sound reminiscent of a solid Led Zeppelin tribute rather than showcasing intricate musicality. Their tracks, such as ‘Here Again‘ and ‘Working Man‘, resemble straightforward jams rather than complex compositions.
The lyrics of the debut album reflect simpler rock and roll themes, typical of the era’s mainstream rock bands. Geddy Lee openly discussed the challenges they faced with lyrics, which Rutsey mostly discarded in a last-minute decision. Lee recalled in an interview with AV Club that Rutsey destroyed his initial lyrics due to dissatisfaction, leading Lee to urgently write almost all the album’s lyrics.
The result was a mix of impactful lines and some less memorable ones. While the track ‘In the Mood‘ aimed for a sensual vibe akin to Led Zeppelin’s style, it didn’t quite reach the same iconic status.
Peart’s entry into the band with the album Fly By Night marked a lyrical evolution. Some of Lee’s earlier lyrics noticeably contrasted with Peart’s more sophisticated compositions. Even with occasional simplistic lyrics, Rush found their best expression in more elaborate themes. This interplay of straightforward and intricate elements helped define their unique sound in rock music.
